In the autumn of 1950 Vilnius Regional Library was established and started functioning. It was temporarily given a room of 20 sq. m in the premises of the former Council of Cultural and Educational Institutions Committee of Vilnius Region (present Rašytoju St. 40). Formation of the Library staff began. 16 employees were already working in the Library in October.

In May of 1951 the Library moved to the premises of the former Vilnius Library No 2 (Traku St. 10), to one of the buildings of the Old Town of Vilnius where step by step separate units of the Library were being formed.

In 1955, the year of the 100th anniversary of Adam Mickiewicz’ death, the Library was given the name of the poet.

In 1977 the Children’s Literature Department was founded in the neighbouring building (Traku St. 12).

In 1978 the Methodological Department which rendered professional aid to Vilnius region libraries was established officially.

In August of 1988 the reconstruction work of the Library premises began.

In May of 1991 the reconstruction of the Library building was finished according to the considerably amended reconstruction project. Several departments moved to the reconstructed premises.

In 1992 the structure of the Library was in the main reorganized, the number of employees was reduced and some Library departments were abolished and/or combined.

In January of 1993 the Library acquired the first computer.

On 26 October 1994 the Austrian Literature Reading Room was opened.

On 01 September 1995 by observing the Law on Libraries of the Republic of Lithuania the Library was named Vilnius County Adomas Mickevicius Public Library.

On 01 October 1998 the Reference Reading Room was opened. 5 (five) computerized places of work were arranged for readers by presenting them possibility of using the Internet for a certain fee. 2 (two) computerized places of work were also arranged in the Children’s Literature Department.

In 1998 a Cooperation Agreement was signed with the National Library of Lithuania about participation of the Library in working out a union catalogue of the Lithuanian integral library information system (LIBIS).

On 22 October 1999 the representative hall of the Library was opened in the General Reading Room. The hall was restored with the help of Lithuanian and Austrian funds.

On 10 November 2000 the Swiss Literature Reading Room was inaugurated in the premises of the Austrian Literature Reading Room.

In November 2000 the publication “50 Years to Vilnius County Adomas Mickevicius Public Library” was issued.

On 24 December 2000 the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Library took place.

Since 2002 the computer catalogue has been compiled and arranged (from 2004 it can be used by all visitors).

In December 2002 the Library Administration and Methodological Department moved to the newly reconstructed premises.

On 25 April 2003 the Library took an active part in the first public action of Lithuanian librarians at the Seimas House. The organizers of the action were theLithuanian Librarians’ Association (Chairman P. Zurlys, Director of the Library). The action was focused on increasing librarians’ wages.

In March 2004 the Law on Libraries was amended and it provided that Lithuanian public libraries fell under the jurisdiction of a relevant county instead of being subordinate to the Ministry of Culture.

On 17 November 2004 the Library participated in a general protest action of Lithuanian librarians regarding lack of funds for stock acquisition. It was called “the silent candle action”. The libraries of the country switched off the light for five minutes and lit candles in reading rooms.

On 01 July 2004 the Information Technology Department was established.         

In April 2006 the projecting work of Library buildings reconstruction began.
